Expert Tips for Preventing Bad Breath

1. Brush and floss after every meal

If bad breath, also called halitosis, keeps you at some distance from those around you, start brushing and flossing after every meal. This removes the bad-breath-causing bacteria that riddle your mouth, especially after eating. To make your brushing even more effective, opt for an electric toothbrush, which applies uniform pressure and removes more bacteria and built-up plaque than traditional brushing.

2. Clean your tongue

Although many believe bad breath stems from dirty teeth, often your tongue is the culprit. Because of its bumpy service, your tongue hides dead skin cells, bacteria, and even food debris that lead to halitosis. To clean it, Dr. Trizzino recommends using a specialized toothbrush with a built-in tongue cleaner. If you really want to freshen your mouth, use a tongue scraper, a flexible piece of plastic that removes the top, mucus-based layer of your tongue.

3. Choose a bacteria-eliminating mouthwash

Many people reach for mouthwash to help with their bad breath, but to get the most from your swish, choose a mouthwash based on its bacteria-eliminating properties, not its good smell. While these superficial mouthwashes improve how your mouth and breath smell to you, they have limited effect on reducing and eliminating bacteria, the root cause of bad breath.

4. Drink green tea after eating

If you can’t get to the bathroom to brush your teeth after eating, opt for an alternative. While rinsing with water removes some leftover food debris and bacteria, drinking a cup of green tea supports good dental hygiene. With its antibacterial properties, green tea eliminates bacteria and improves your breath.

5. Stay hydrated

Throughout the day, your mouth is filled with saliva, which keeps it moist and hydrated. But when dehydration sets in, such as with chronic dry mouth or awakening in the morning, bacteria thrive, leading to bad breath. To fight dehydration, drink plenty of water throughout the day, and start your morning with a glass of water instead of coffee.

6. Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet

For the freshest breath, Dr. Trizzino recommends eating a well-balanced diet filled with real, whole foods. Processed meals and sugary snacks create an environment where bacteria thrive. Diets focused on fasting and low-carbs can invite bacteria, too. Increasing your consumption of foods rich in vitamin C can lessen bacteria, too.

7. Reach for a crunchy snack

When you need something to hold you over until your next meal, reach for crunchy raw fruits and vegetables. Foods like celery, carrots, and apples reduce bacterial growth in your mouth, clean your teeth, and improve your breath.

8. Avoid halitosis-causing foods

There’s a reason vampires don’t like garlic — it leads to bad breath. Dr. Trizzino suggests avoiding garlic, onions, and spicy foods, which tend to linger and remind everyone around you, whether at the office party or your family get-together, what you ate for lunch.

9. Chew sugar-free gum

Unlike mints, which just mask bad breath, sugar-free gum can reduce the amount of bacteria in your mouth by retaining moisture and flushing bacteria from your teeth. What’s more, mints often contain high amounts of sugar, which simply feed bacteria’s growth in your mouth.

10. Visit your dentist regularly

Routine dental visits are perhaps one of the most effective ways to eliminate bad breath because they keep your mouth healthy and clean. During these visits, which include cleanings and preventive care, Dr. Trizzino can evaluate your oral health and determine the cause of your bad breath. While bacteria is often the cause, halitosis can also come from gum disease, cracked fillings, diabetes, acid reflux, and chronic bronchitis.
